GOVERNOR JEB BUSH'S ATTENTION was drawn to a Hillsborough County elementary school where the improved F-CAT scores raised the school grade from D to A in one year. He visited the school to be "just one of the kids" in the fifth grade class, where reading specialist Janet
Caruthers Doolin taught a lesson from the book SHE had written, The New Book of Knowledge. School principal Lillian Wagner cited this book; used the previous year, as part of the miracle. Thus, in some circles, Doolin became known as the F-CAT tamer. Jeb liked the concept used in the book. Hundreds of teachers now using it applaud it loudly. Their students beg to work from it as they build their own "Book of Knowledge" through drawing and labeling objects. Unfortunately, many schools are unaware of this book, written especially for teachers, by a teacher whose career spans 24 years. [Labeled parts of objects have Spanish translation.]
Educational Specialist, Janet Caruthers Doolin, is certain to score again with her second book, Parts of Everyday Things and Other Stuff Children Need to Know. She wrote it as a guide to help parents understand exactly what do to make their child "school ready." Doolin wants to tap the tender roots of learning through the parent, who is a child's first and best teacher. The book's focus is on building essential vocabulary and general knowledge. Doolin explains, "The size of a child's vocabulary is important because the more words a child knows when entering school, the easier it will be for him to learn other new things. Parts of Everyday Things includes important tips for reading with young children that will enhance their later learning skills and create a love for reading. An old-fashioned approach is used by Doolin, with a list of wise sayings and her take on nursery rhymes (She counts them important!). In contrast, a new-fangled flair is shown through her exciting new concept of labeling parts of 21 "Everyday Things." Large color photographs of these objects, catch the child's eye and imagination. For each photo, Doolin gives library call numbers of children's books that relate to it. The simple, interesting "fun time."
Hundreds of things (great stuff) children should know, lie between the pages of this mini-dictionary for kids, Parts of Everyday Things. Parents are amazed at the abundance of information presented in categories such as baby animal names, things to look through, and where people play sports.
According to Doolin, five important things a child needs to take with him his first day of school are: (1.) a storehouse of background knowledge; (2.) a large vocabulary; (3.) a good attitude about learning; (4.) self-confidence because they feel smart; and (5.) phonological awareness necessary for successful reading. The parent who uses this book in the child's early years can be assured those five things will be in place on the first day of school.
This is Janet Doolin's second book. Her first title, The New Book of Knowledge, combines drawing with vocabulary building. She also offers a family workbook, titled Family Learning Time.
